One day a new girl started temping in the next department, the same age as me, and really attractive too, apparently she was working for the summer while she was home from university.
Now usually I am a very timid and awkward man, but on this day I saw her on her own at lunchtime in the canteen and decided to go over and sit next to her. I don't know what came over me, maybe it was because the only person I'd had to talk to of my own age for almost a year. In my mind, as I walked over to her I was James Bond, slowly walking up to his next conquest. But as I sat down I realised I didn't have a clue what to say to her. what did I even know about her anyway? Then I thought of something.
"You work in the office with Maureen don't you? is she the most boring women on the planet or what?"
What she said back to me still haunts me over 25 years later.
"Actually that's my mum." she angrily got up and left as the canteen went silent around us.
I think I sat there and didn't look up until I knew everyone else had left the canteen.
I sat in my car for lunch for the rest of that summer to avoid her.
